Balda Sell-off: The End of Mobile-phone Molding in Europe?  
German molder and contract assembler Balda (Bad Oeynhausen) intends to focus its efforts on growth in Asia, and on assembly of touch screens. As a result, the firm says it will sell, possibly by year’s end, its injection molding operations for cell-phone housings in Germany and Hungary. The firm does intend to keep hold of its European medical molding business: a relatively small (€25 million/yr sales) and new unit at Balda. Read more...

Plastics Manufacturer in Baldwin, Wisconsin to Expand
Contour Plastics has announced plans for a major facility expansion that will nearly double its space to 90,000 square feet and create 75 new jobs in Baldwin. The 2-story addition will include office space, clean room facilities, a training room and a mezzanine. The firm plans to invest around $5.3 million in the building and new equipment. The company makes injection-molded parts for high-tech industries such as medical, communications, business machines and electronics. A May groundbreaking is anticipated with completion by year’s end.

Freedom Plastics to Expand in Jansville, Wisconsin
Janesville, WI - Freedom Plastics, one of the nation’s premier manufacturers of plastic piping systems, will receive $42,000 in Enterprise Development Zone tax credits from the Wisconsin Department of Commerce to help with an expansion project. The business has started a three-phase growth plan that includes worker training, purchase of new equipment and a plant expansion. The tax credits will be used to facilitate the creation of 14 new jobs in conjunction with the $3.3 million expansion.

Southeastern Container to Build in Beloit, Wisconsin
In Beloit, Southeastern Container is building a new $25 million, 200,000-square-foot plastic bottle manufacturing facility and the Wisconsin Department of Transportation is pitching in with assistance for the project. The DOT will provide a $310,000 Transportation Assistance Grant to the City of Beloit to cover a portion of the cost of constructing 850 feet of new street in Beloit’s Gateway Business Park. Forward Participated in National Plastics Exposition
Wisconsin’s leadership in the plastics industry was apparent in June of 2006 when Forward Wisconsin and its team joined 50 Wisconsin plastics-related firms on the exhibit floor at McCormick Place in Chicago for the National Plastics Exposition (NPE 2006), June 19-23.

Corporate Tax Burden: Plastics Industry Report Released 
The Wisconsin Department of Revenue released a report titled “Corporate Tax Burden: Plastics Industry” that shows Wisconsin will have the fourth lowest total tax liability, compared with 14 other states, for a hypothetical plastics company, when the single sales factor apportionment is fully implemented in 2008.
